Before Your Audition

In advance of an in-person audition, all students must provide the following documents:

  • A Roman Catholic baptismal certificate for the student or at least one parent
  • A copy of his birth certificate
  • His two most recent report cards
  • A teacher reference form

These documents are required to be submitted electronically a minimum of two weeks prior to the date of audition. Audition dates will not be confirmed until all documents have been submitted and fees have been paid.

On The Day Of Your Audition

Please arrive at least ten minutes ahead of your scheduled audition time. Students will be seen one-on-one by an auditioner, where they will go through a vocal assessment designed not only to assess a student’s vocal and musical ability, but also their listening skills and teachability.

Below are some grade-specific audition requirements.

Grades 3 and 4

For Grade 3 and 4 auditions, students will be asked to:

  • Sing O Canada or a song of their choice
  • Sing back melodies and various vocal exercises led by the teacher
  • Play a piece of their choice on the piano or other instrument (if they are currently studying an instrument)

Grades 5 and up

For Grades 5 and up, students will be asked to:

  • Sing a song of their choice
  • Sing back melodies and various vocal exercises led by the teacher
  • Sight sing a very short melody

Ideally, candidates for grades 5 and up are in a choir and/or currently studying an instrument. Students should be prepared to play a piece on their chosen instrument.

After Your Audition

You will receive an email in the week following your son’s audition letting you know his results. If auditioners think your son is a good candidate for St. Michael’s Choir School, you will be invited to make an appointment for an academic assessment. This normally takes place two weeks after the vocal audition.

Following academic assessments, offers of admission will be sent out by email in May. Offer emails are followed by an admissions package sent to your home by mail. Your son’s place at the school will be held pending payment of a choral program fee deposit. Details on the amount and due date for the deposit will be included in the admissions package. If you have not submitted your deposit by the due date, your son may be moved on to a waiting list.

Admissions packages will include:

Please note that starting in Grade 5, the program offered is in Extended French.
