St. Michael’s Choir School is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Victor Cheng, Class of 2002, as our new Senior Choir Conductor, effective September 2025.
Mr. Cheng is an accomplished pianist, conductor, and educator whose career spans the worlds of orchestral, choral, and chamber music. We are delighted to welcome him back to SMCS, where he will bring his artistry, versatility, and deep commitment to sacred music to the next generation of choristers.
As a collaborative pianist, Mr. Cheng has performed with distinguished ensembles including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the National Ballet of Canada, TO Live Orchestra, the Glenn Gould School, the Royal Conservatory of Music, and the University of Toronto. He has appeared in recitals with world-class trombonists Alain Trudel, Nitzan Haroz, and Fabrice Millischer, as well as Toronto Symphony Orchestra musicians Gordon Wolfe, Vanessa Fralick, and Christopher Gongos. In 2025, he served as resident collaborative pianist at the International Trombone Festival, and his chamber music career has taken him around the globe, performing piano quartets and quintets.
Equally active as an orchestral and choral conductor, Mr. Cheng studied with Ivars Taurins and co-founded the Sneak Peek Orchestra with composer Kevin Lau, dedicated to presenting new Canadian works alongside orchestral classics. His strong foundation in sacred music includes serving as Music Director of Our Lady of Annunciation Parish in Oak Ridges, ON., along with decades of experience as an organist, choral conductor, and church musician.
In addition to his performing and conducting work, Mr. Cheng maintains a thriving private piano studio, mentoring students of all ages. He holds bachelor’s degrees in Jazz, Piano Performance and Education from the University of Toronto.
Please join us in welcoming Mr. Cheng back to the SMCS community and offering your support as he begins this new chapter in our music program.
