Appointment of Mr. Walter Mahabir, Class of 2008 - Junior Choir Conductor

St. Michael’s Choir School is delighted to announce the appointment of Mr. Walter Mahabir, Class of 2008, as our Junior Choir Conductor, effective September 2025.

Mr. Mahabir brings a wealth of choral experience, both as a conductor and as a professional singer, to this important role in shaping our choristers during their formative years. We are thrilled to welcome him to the permanent music faculty, where he will continue to inspire our young singers with his artistry, energy, and dedication to the SMCS tradition.

A graduate of McGill University with a Master’s degree in Choral Conducting, Mr. Mahabir also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Classical Voice from York University. His previous conducting roles include Choral Conductor at the Community Music Schools of Toronto, leadership of several choirs with the Oakville Choir for Children and Youth, and assistant conductor positions with both the Resound Choir of Oshawa and the Orpheus Choir of Toronto.

As a singer, Mr. Mahabir has performed with distinguished ensembles including the Toronto Mendelssohn Singers, Ontario Male Chorus, Ottawa Bach Choir, Nathaniel Dett Chorale, Cantabile Chamber Singers, Voces Boréales, and the Canadian Male Chorus. His musical journey has taken him across Canada, the United States, Austria, France, the Czech Republic, Italy, and Germany, where he has participated in choral concerts and conducting workshops.

In addition to his role at SMCS, Mr. Mahabir leads the choral program at the National Music Camp of Canada, fostering the next generation of musicians in a variety of settings.
