St. Michael’s Choir School is delighted to announce the appointment of Ms. Cheryll Chung as our new Elementary Choir Conductor, effective September 2025.

Ms. Chung is a highly respected conductor and educator with over two decades of experience in music leadership, performance, and education. We are thrilled to welcome her to our faculty, where she will be working closely with the Elementary Choir to build the foundations of artistry, discipline, and joy in music-making.

No stranger to SMCS, Ms. Chung has already worked with our students in past seasons, including her leadership in the Online Academy program and as guest clinician for the Mississauga Children’s Choir Junior Treble Festival this past April, where our boys participated and thrived under her direction. Her rapport with young singers and her dedication to developing their musical potential make her a natural fit for this important role.

Ms. Chung’s current teaching appointments include the Phil and Eli Taylor Academy, the Glenn Gould School, and the Oscar Peterson School at the Royal Conservatory of Music, where she conducts, teaches piano, and offers vocal coaching. She has also held leadership roles with the York Region District School Board, the Heliconian Choir and Orchestra, the St. James Town Children’s Choir, and the Canadian Children’s Opera Company. Her expertise in K–8 music education has guided the growth of hundreds of young musicians.

An active clinician and adjudicator, Ms. Chung has contributed her expertise to schools, community organizations, and international competitions, including the Toronto Regional CAMMAC Choral-Orchestral Reading, the Aegio International Piano Competition (2025), the Sea to Sky International Piano Competition (Steinway & Sons, 2023), and the Crescendo International Music Competition (2023).

Since founding the Cantabile Chamber Singers in 2006, she has built the ensemble into a celebrated fixture in Toronto’s choral landscape, known for artistic excellence and collaborations with Canadian composers. Her educational and artistic work continues to enrich Canada’s choral repertoire.

Ms. Chung holds a Master of Music in Conducting, as well as Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Education degrees from the University of Toronto, where she studied with Dr. Doreen Rao, and Maestro Raffi Armenian, and was named the Elmer Iseler Conducting Fellow. She has pursued advanced studies with Simon Carrington and Helmuth Rilling at the Yale Norfolk Chamber Choir and Choral Conducting Workshop and the Oregon Bach Festival.

Please join us in welcoming Ms. Chung to the SMCS community and offering your support as she begins this new chapter with our Elementary Choir.
